Identity Capital (IC) can be defined as a combination as
self-esteem, self-efficacy, internal locus-of-control and emotional stability. IC
will not grow unless the person is placed in an environment that facilitates
its growth. This means providing the person with the right access to the right sort of accommodation,
education and employment resources, at the right time and in the right place.
The accommodation/community care plan must include a Contingency Risk Management Plan. This will include a provision for special accommodation, outside of the HMO, to manage a crisis episode.
This means that, if necessary a Street Triage
Team could detain a person at a/the address, as a temporary Place of Safety
under the Mental Health Act. This would be necessary, for instance, if someone
has been detained in a public place by the Police and has been transported to A&E
for physical care, but upon discharge they find themselves technically
homeless. The accommodation must be available on a 24/7 basis, accessible at
short notice, safe and secure, and protect someone’s privacy and dignity.
2) People who are in recovery from an addiction and need a safe space to work on their mental health problems, which may include a period of detoxification.
The classes will be about the students developing an understanding of themselves and their relationships to others, through life-story work, involving anyone else in their community/family as required.
The work will be archived online and could be presented as ‘social research’ for academic credit.
The life-story work should also convert quite easily into a C.V. style appraisal of achieved and potential competencies that can be used by local Human Resource Agencies to place students in suitable employment environments for temporary ‘placement experiences’.
Accommodation
There is a local need to develop (Houses of Multiple
Occupation) HMO’s as ‘therapeutic communities’. This means developing HMOs for
people with same or similar (psychiatric or social care) needs.
The Landlord will maintain the premises and
receive a guaranteed payment from the Personal Care Budget. The LA/NHS will share
responsibility for staffing as part of a negotiated community care plan. The
contractual terms and conditions will be purchased and overseen by Care
Co-ordinators acting on behalf of the local Clinical Commissioning Group(s).The accommodation/community care plan must include a Contingency Risk Management Plan. This will include a provision for special accommodation, outside of the HMO, to manage a crisis episode.
Education
As part of the tenancy agreement the tenant must agree to
attend therapeutic activities in the community. They may lose their tenancy if
they default on the agreed care plan.
The Recovery College should develop classes for the
different psychiatric profiles involved. Those groups will specifically be people
who are at risk of self-harm or suicide, e.g.:
1) People between the age of 18 and 27 who have
insecure identities, emotional instability, and problematic interpersonal
relationships in their domestic environments2) People who are in recovery from an addiction and need a safe space to work on their mental health problems, which may include a period of detoxification.
The classes will be commissioned on the basis of their
longer-term impact on A&E attendances and/or inpatient admissions.
The groups would be about developing people exploring and
growing their ‘Identity Capital’ (IC) within different (cultural) scripts and settings.
In theory, these groups find it difficult to convert/transfer
their IC between different (cultural) scripts and settings. Mental health crises
occur when someone’s IC is devalued. This may or may not be within their
control. The classes will be about the students developing an understanding of themselves and their relationships to others, through life-story work, involving anyone else in their community/family as required.
The work will be archived online and could be presented as ‘social research’ for academic credit.
Employment
The education should also provide a route into employment.
Strengths-Based assessments and Individual Placement Support will be used to
build someone’s IC in the context of an apprenticeship.
It is predicted that many employment
opportunities will be becoming available in the local economy as Brexit takes
effect. This will be especially acute in the local health and social care
industry. Students will be able to use their lived experiences to help others
in this industry. The life-story work should also convert quite easily into a C.V. style appraisal of achieved and potential competencies that can be used by local Human Resource Agencies to place students in suitable employment environments for temporary ‘placement experiences’.
